As of the 2012 census, Tanzania’s 31 regions were divided into 169 districts. A different district council administers each section. Cities are independently governed by their boards, and while administratively located within an area, they are not considered within a district. There is only one type of rural district: the District Council. There are also three types of urban communities: Town Council, Municipal Council, and City Council.
